Easy and No-Bake Oatmeal Bars
There is a cereal bar called Flapjacks among the traditional British sweets I mentioned before. It's a recipe where you simply mix oats with plenty of butter and honey (in the UK, golden syrup is often used) and bake it in the oven.
These flapjacks have a delicious flavor and a satisfying crunchy texture, making them quick and enjoyable to make when you're hungry.
This time, I've transformed the flapjacks into a slightly healthier version of oatmeal bars. Instead of butter, I used vegetable oil, and I added a combination of nuts and dried fruits as toppings to make it more suitable for breakfast.
Ingredients
You can substitute nuts and dried fruits with your preferred or easily accessible options. If you want to give it more of a snack-like feel, you can use melted butter instead of vegetable oil and use chocolate chips instead of dried fruits.
- Oatmeal - I used quick oats.
- Nuts - I used almonds.
- Dried fruits - I used a combination of raisins and cranberries, about half of each.
- Honey
- Vegetable oil - I used sunflower oil.
Instructions
- Place an oven sheet in a 15cm (6 inches) square pan.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F).
In a bowl, combine oats, roughly chopped nuts, dried fruits, honey, and vegetable oil.
Pour the mixture into the prepared pan lined with parchment paper and press it down firmly using a spoon or any other utensil.
Bake in the preheated oven at 180°C (356°F) for about 20 minutes, or until the surface is nicely browned. Once removed from the oven, allow it to cool to room temperature.
Once cooled, cut into your desired size.
Storage
Store the oatmeal bars at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. They can last for about a week, but they are best consumed within 3 to 4 days for optimal taste.
Since honey can absorb moisture, the crunchy texture may diminish over time. Before consuming, you can toast or bake the bars in a toaster or oven to restore their crispiness, ensuring they remain delicious even after some time.
Equipment
I used a square mold, but if you don't have one, you can substitute a baking sheet or oven-safe baking pan.
Q&A
Is this recipe gluten free?
Oats, which are the main ingredient in oatmeal, are naturally gluten-free. Therefore, this recipe is gluten-free since it does not contain wheat flour.
However, it's important to note that oats can often be contaminated with wheat during processing in facilities that handle wheat products. Additionally, oats and wheat are commonly grown in close proximity, which can lead to cross-contamination even before harvest.
For individuals with gluten allergies, it is crucial to check the packaging for the "gluten-free" label to ensure that the oats are certified as such.
