Crumble turns fruit into dessert!

The Best Simple Apple Crumble Recipe

Crumble is a traditional British dessert consisting of fruit topped with a sweet, crispy mixture called crumble, baked in the oven. By baking the fruit together with the crumble, it brings out the natural sweetness of the fruit and adds a delightful crunchy texture.

Despite its simplicity of sautéing the fruit and topping it with crumble, this dessert gives you a luxurious experience reminiscent of enjoying a tart.

The crumble itself is made with a simple combination of flour, sugar, and butter in a ratio of 2:1:1. In this recipe, we've added almond powder and switched to brown sugar, creating an even more aromatic and delicious crumble.

Ingredients

The Best Simple Apple Crumble Ingredients
  • Brown Sugar - While regular granulated sugar can be used, using brown sugar adds a richer and more aromatic flavor to the crumble. It enhances the depth of the taste.
  • Almond powder - If you don't have almond powder, you can substitute it with an equal amount of cake flour. It will still yield delicious results.
  • Cake flour
  • Unsalted butter
  • Apples - I used a slightly larger heatproof dish (about 20cm square), so using just 2 apples left some gaps. If using a similar-sized dish, it's recommended to use around 3 apples to fill it properly.

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) before using.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix with a scraper or fork to cut into small pieces You can also mix by hand, but be quick as the heat from your hands will melt the butter

In a bowl, place all the ingredients and mix them together using a scraper or a fork, cutting them finely. You can also mix them by hand, but do it quickly to prevent the butter from melting due to the heat from your hands.

粉気がなくなり全体がしっとりとして、粉チーズのようなポロポロとした感じになったらできあがりです。使うまで冷蔵庫に入れておきます。

Once the mixture becomes crumbly and moist, it is ready. Store it in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Peel and wash the apples, then remove the cores. Cut each apple into 8 equal wedges, and further divide them into 2-3 smaller pieces, making them bite-sized.

In a frying pan, add brown sugar and butter, bring to a simmer and melt, then add apples

In a frying pan, melt the brown sugar and butter together. Then add the apples to the pan.

Stir-fry the apples over high heat. Keep the heat high to maintain the fresh texture of the apples, similar to searing the surface of meat. The high heat will also caramelize the sugar, adding a deliciously fragrant flavor to the apples.

Bake in a preheated 200°C(400°F) oven for 20-25 minutes until the crumble is nicely browned.

Make a crumble with other fruits

Apple crumble is a classic favorite! Since apples are available throughout the year, it's easy to make. However, you can also enjoy delicious crumbles with other seasonal fruits.

  • cherry
  • plum
  • berry

Crumble arrangement

The basic crumble mixture consists of flour, sugar, and butter in a ratio of 2:1:1. In this recipe, we have substituted half of the flour with almond powder and replaced the sugar with brown sugar.

You can further enhance the flavor by adding nuts, seasoning with spices like cinnamon, or even making a chocolate variation by incorporating cocoa powder. Feel free to experiment and customize your crumble according to your preferences.

Equipment

Square Glass Baking Dish (8in x 8in)

Storage

Crumbles are known for their crisp and crunchy texture. Over time, the crumble topping may become slightly softer, so it is recommended to enjoy it freshly baked or consume it as soon as possible.

When storing, make sure the crumble has completely cooled down before placing it in an airtight container and refrigerating it. Typically, crumbles can be kept for around 2 to 3 days.
